DR. SUSAN BAILEY ROBINSON


Originally from Pennsylvania, Robinson has been employed as a conductor of orchestras, bands, and choirs in the states of Indiana, Michigan, Texas, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Maine. She has conducted instrumental and vocal ensembles throughout the United States and Europe, and has enjoyed much success as a music director in professional and educational theatres. Robinson has earned a Ph. D. in fine arts/orchestral conducting from Texas Tech University, a M.M. in choral/orchestral conducting from Ball State University, and a B.A. in music performance from Susquehanna University.

Susan Bailey Robinson is Conductor and Music Director of the Pinellas Youth Symphony, which maintains a full season of concerts, including performances with The Florida Orchestra. Their recent repertoire includes Francesca da Rimini and Symphony No. 4 by Tchaikovsky, Overture to Die Meistersinger, Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" by Dvorak, Scherezade, Pines of Rome, Firebird Suite, Appalachian Spring and Capriccio Espagnol. In 2008, the PYS had its first European performance tour. Robinson is conductor of the South Shore Symphony Orchestra, and teaches music at St. Petersburg College and the Marcia P. Hoffman Institute for the Performing Arts in Clearwater. Robinson has also been music director of the Central Florida Philharmonic Orchestra and the Central Florida Master Choir. Under Robinson these ensembles performed a brilliant array of masterwork literature.

Robinson is in demand as a guest conductor. Recent engagements include the Filharmonica Muntenia in Targoviste Romania, West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra in the Czech Republic, State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Vidin Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria, The Florida Orchestra, San Angelo Symphony (TX), Spokane Symphony (WA), Long Bay Symphony (SC), Dubuque Symphony Orchestra (IA), Fayetteville Symphony (NC), St. Petersburg Symphony Congress Orchestra in Russia, Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic in the Czech Republic, and Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra (FL). In addition, she has worked with the Las Cruces Symphony, Lubbock Symphony, Amarillo Symphony, Idaho Falls Symphony, and Denver Symphony. On June 17, 2011 she will conduct the Camerata Europaea in a performance at the Berlin Konzerthose in Germany.

Robinson has been invited to participate in the Dmitris Metropoulos International Conducting Competition in Greece, the "Mario Gusella�" International Competition in Italy, and the Kirill Kondrashin International Competition for Young Conductors in the Netherlands. She was the only American finalist in the 2002 Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition.

In the academic environment, Dr. Robinson has over fifteen years of teaching experience at the college/university level. She is currently orchestral conductor at the University of Tampa, a visiting professor of piano, music theory, and music history at St. Petersburg College and has served two years as interim conductor of the University of Florida Orchestra. During her tenure, she led the orchestra in performances that included Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6, Glazounov" Saxophone Concerto, Brahms Symphony No. 1, and Beethoven Symphony No. 8. She also taught conducting. In her other college positions, Dr. Robinson has served alternately as both Director of Instrumental and Director of Choral Activities. Her courseload has included Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Show Choir, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Pep Band, music appreciation, music history, music theory, ethnomusicology, humanities, class piano, class voice, and private lessons.

As a stage musical director, Robinson has conducted works such as Amahl and the Night Visitors, Man of La Mancha, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Sound of Music, Little Shoppe of Horrors, South Pacific, Urinetown, and many others. She feels strongly about education and is active as a clinician, working with young conductors, and vocal and instrumental ensembles throughout the United States.
