Jack Heller, Music
Director, is Professor Emeritus in the School of Music at the University of
South Florida, Tampa. He received his undergraduate training at the
Juilliard School, master’s degree from the University of Michigan, and Ph.D.
from the University of Iowa. He has held postdoctoral fellowships at The
Ohio State University and at Yale University.![]() From 1960-85 he was Professor of Music at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, where he also served as Associate Dean of Fine Arts. He was elected Research Chairman and President of the Connecticut Music Educators Association, was a member of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) Research Council and chaired the International Society for Music Education Research Commission. He has also served as a member of editorial committees for the Council for Research in Music Education Bulletin, Journal of Research in Music Education, Research Perspectives in Music Education. and Psychomusicology. Dr. Heller has been concertmaster of symphony and opera orchestras, has toured with various chamber music groups, and has made numerous recital and solo appearances with various ensembles. His conducting experience includes Music Director of the University of Connecticut Orchestra (1960-66), Music Director of the Manchester (CT) Symphony Orchestra and Chorale (1968-85), and Music Director of the Nutmeg Chamber Orchestra (1984-86). From 1992 to 2002 he was Music Director for the Spanish Lyric Theatre (a light opera company in central Florida). He has been invited as guest conductor of various orchestras from New York (the New York City Ballet) to Prague (the Czech Radio Orchestra). In 1986 he was appointed Music Director of the Tampa Bay Symphony, a post he continues to hold. He accepted the position as Professor in the School of Music at the University of South Florida, Tampa in 1985, and served as Director of the School of Music from 1985-95. Since his retirement from the University in 1998, he continues to teach and carry on his research activities in the psychology of music as a part-time professor. |
